automotive power train component technology company
and Cummins Engine Company, the largest independent
diesel engine manufacturer in the world. He also has
served as a consultant for a large-scale passenger
car engine development project in Taiwan and in the
strategic planning of various companies in the US. |

Dr. Chu led the turn around of this 4-year-old joint venture company. The company manufactures and markets transmissions and transfer cases for trucks and 4x4 vehicles. Starting with a critical review of the company operations including manufacturing efficiency, supply chain management, financial planning and reporting, cost structures, human resource systems, and financing, Dr. Chu implemented changes that significantly improved the company's performance, including:
- Reduced head count by 70%.
- Recruited and developed new management staff members.
- Reduced the breakeven sales revenue by 50%.
- Received ISO-9000 certification.
- Established functional links with Borg Warner headquarters.
- Restructured the joint venture company and extracted part of the capital of BorgWarner.
- Formed a new joint venture company with 80% ownership.

Dr. Chu managed the overall Cummins business in Southeast Asia and established Cummins business in China. His responsibilities included profit and loss, marketing and sales, distribution systems, operation start-up, component sourcing, negotiations and management of wholly owned subsidiaries, licensees, and joint venture companies. He also managed regional offices in Singapore, Hong Kong, China and the US.
Major Accomplishments:
- Increased sales by 300% in five years with comparable profit improvements.
- Restructured the marketing and distribution system in Singapore , Malaysia , Thailand , Indonesia , and Hong Kong to sustain growth.
- Successfully negotiated and implemented two license agreements with two major auto works of China. (Both license agreements transformed into joint ventures and formed the foundation for Cummins to become the dominate heavy duty engine supplier.)

Dr. Chu led the development and introduction of engine after treatment systems, a new component for reduction of diesel exhaust pollution levels. This program included integration of new catalyst chemistry, ceramic materials development, and electronic control technology with diesel engines. Dr. Chu also developed relationships with new suppliers and clarified rules with regulatory agencies.
Dr. Chu was responsible for planning and implementation of a corporate wide alternate fuel engine program including recommendation for alternative fuels, determination of target markets, selection of technical directions, and introduction of new products. Dr. Chu's work laid the foundation for Cummins Engine Compnay's new line of natural gas powered engines.

Dr. Chu has been serving on the Board of Directors of KPT, USA, a ceramic tile manufacturer and marketing company [since ????]. There, he was instrumental in reducing KPT's cost structure and improving product quality.

Dr. Chu conducted a feasibility study, including assessment of technical, manufacturing, and supply base capability for the design, development, manufacturing and marketing of a family of passer engines. He selected an engineering design firm to provide design technology and led contract negotiations. Dr. Chu also conducted technical program reviews and critiques, and developed a business plan for the establishment of an engine company to produce the engine. |
